ON QUEER PORN STARS:

"The idea was to ask our friends and our community to come out and do the hottest, most extreme scenes they could do; hopefully a scene that they might not get the opportunity to do in other forums.

In talking to them while building the personality of the site, we knew we were going to be asking them questions that they had very interesting answers for. We had under our very noses, not only all of this hardcore content, but also a documentary of this sexually transgressive culture right now, and how people feel right now.

So we asked them in the video interviews for the star pages: ‘What is your definition of queer and what does queer mean to you?’ and ‘Do you consider yourself an exhibitionist and what does that mean to you?’ ‘What does being a sex worker mean to you?’ ‘How has porn changed your life?’

I think there are so many misconceptions about all of those subjects, and so many more subjects that we asked them about, and here we have these primary sources who, thankfully, are willing to be so gut wrenchingly honest with us because of the real relationships we have with them.

In particular, I really hope these primary source interviews can be used as fodder against those who say that essentially porn is degrading to women, who say that porn essentially exploits the performers, porn is essentially negative and should be destroyed in our society.

We have people saying “We love this! Don’t take this away from us!” So hopefully we’ll be able to make fools of anti-porn people.

And to me, while I am totally proud of the smut we’ve made, those video interviews are the thing I’m most proud of and I can’t wait to see how people react to it."

ON DOCUMENTING A QUEER COMMUNITY

"We are documenting the Queer culture as it, but community isn’t static and culture isn’t static. Communities who are historically disenfranchised by society will thrive when they know, and see, a way they can proliferate, when they see their people being proud. In particular, the community that we are documenting is a community that is oppressed and suppressed.

We are extremely fortunate, and I think we take this for granted, that we can express ourselves without fear of judgment and it is almost our responsibility as San Francisco Queers to take what we have; which is the ability to walk down the street holding hands with our partners without fear of violence and hate, and use that to help Queer people who aren’t so fortunate. We get to create a worldwide network of people who can be proud of who they are and express their sexuality and get off and feel great.

A very important part of the definition of Queer for me is inclusivity. I am not a separatist in any way. So to open porn up and say: “Anybody can be a queer porn star!” we really do believe that.

Also, the truth is that queer porn thrives financially because there are non-queer people who fetishize that culture. We definitely made Queer Porn TV for Queer people, but also with non-queer people in mind. Not just as a financial demographic, but also because we’re hoping to turn that idea of fetishizing Queer culture around and reclaiming it by saying, ok, if you want to jerk off to us, you’re going to have to speak our language.

Even though there is some sensationalism in how we market the site, you know, “Hot queers at their hardcore horniest” it’s always a little bit ironic and a little bit tongue in cheek. It’s like a Trojan horse; a way to get into people’s minds and computers and bedrooms with our radical politics that are obvious on the site. And not just ours, but the politics of all the people who have been involved."

ON WHAT MAKES QUEER PORN TV UNIQUE:

"We are completely self-funded and unfortunately we can’t afford to pay our actors as much as we think they are worth. But, at the same time, as a performer myself, I certainly don’t get paid as much as I would in LA to be a porn star. But my experience has been, and as a director for Queer Porn TV the experience I try to create is, that you get to do whatever kind of sexual performance you want, without any kinds of limits.

We don’t tell you how to groom yourself. We don’t tell you how to present yourself. We don’t tell you what is sexy. We tell you that you are fucking sexy.

And we provide a forum for that. For me, that is a great way to make money, even if it’s a little bit of money. I think it shows in the performances that people are so happy to have the opportunity to be their honest sexual selves. I hope that that comes across. "

Why Do You Make Porn?

I am a horny girl that just doesn't get that wet.

MY EXPERIENCE:

I once had a cisgendered male lover with a much larger than average sized cock; the first time we sleep together was at his place, and when he produced a bottle of lube to offer me my respect for him (to say nothing of my arousal!) was considerably increased.

The FPAs have become a Toronto institution thanks to local sex shop Good For Her, which this year honored 47 films and seven websites that, in their words, "expand the boundaries of sexual representation on film and challenge stereotypes that are often found in mainstream porn." Not surprisingly, the event's special guests Shine Louise Houston, April Flores, Tristan Taormino, andNica Noelle were the night's big winners. Walking into a San Francisco art gallery under strict arrival instructions for the exclusive event Art Of Restraint (and wearing a rubber skirt in 80-degree heat so I'd "fit in") had me feeling a lot like Eliza Doolittle. Knowing it was private, expensive, RSVP only -- a quarterly "night of erotic decadence" for a privileged set -- kept me reminded that I was about to see how the "other half" lived out their debaucherous fantasies. Turns out, I did more than just watch.

The taxi was late because evidently despite the fact that San Francisco is Baghdad By The Bay and it's posited by Bill O'Reilly that everything here runs on sex conspiracies, Luxor actually has no respect for timely arrival to bondage events. Doors almost closing, I rushed down the red carpet and into the sanctuary of Femina Potens (feminapotens.org). The door shut behind me with a sort of finality, and with the windows papered over, I instantly realized I was a literal kid-in-a-candy-store snow globe of Eros and erudite pervery. Extremely well-dressed people mingled, sipped, and nibbled from chocolate and fruit platters circulating the room. The space was bedecked (bedicked?) with large phallic sculpture; women bound in little more than rope and high heels rushed around waiting on guests, DJs played Portishead and downtempo music -- and I was dictated stringent rules about conduct and photography. These people had thought of everything and some of the guests were wealthy, known, and wanted to stay anonymous. I felt sheepish, nerdy, inexperienced, and shy. Good thing I had a camera.

The Art Of Restraint is a quarterly benefit for Femina Potens and the queer (LGBT) community it serves to represent. The main purpose is to provide an evening of erotic decadence inclusive to the queer and kink community, where the walls between artist and audience are nonexistent and preconceived ideas about bondage -- and art -- are deconstructed, and people have unrestrained (ahem) fun. It's ritzy, has a vibe like "Eyes Wide Shut" -- like the sexy party scenes but without the sex -- and it's a formal affair. Except for the girls wearing nothing but rope and clothespins, that is. But I guess that's its own kind of formality. Like a kinky cocktail salon for the elite. And elite nerds, apparently.

This was the second (sold out) Art of Restraint; at the first event audience members watched Princess Donna, Midori, JD of Two Knotty Boys (link NSFW) and Kink.com's Lochai (of Hogtied.com, NSFW) enact various themed bondage art performances. This included a showstopper when Midori in full rubber Geisha couture spiderwebbed the entire room and willing participants in colorful yarn bondage, then walked out the door, around the block and effectively bound the gallery -- as her stage exit, leaving the string she was attached to quivering as she disappeared into the Castro night. Within minutes of entry and feeling like I should sheepishly run run run back home to my computer, gallery owner Madison Young warmly greeted me and had me instantly laughing and smiling. Young signaled, and a gorgeous blonde sauntered over to me in high heels and rope -- nothing more -- and introduced herself as Tina Horn saying, "Hello, I'll be your submissive for the evening. I will rub ice on you of you get too hot. Tell me if you become thirsty and I'll fetch you a drink." Madison asked if I needed a foot rub -- I stammered, uh, not yet. The blonde followed with, "When your feet hurt, just tell me and I'd love to give you a foot rub. You can spank me if you want to -- I'd like that. I'm your slave."

I managed not to faint. I also managed to thank her and ask for a beverage; going to art shows was never going to be the same. I thought, King Tut is really going to have to "bring it" to the De Young to top this s--t. My gloating was interrupted by seeing porn performers Jiz Lee and Fivestar in the corner at some kind of metal cage -- with sexy Fivestar stripping naked and assembling piles of rope into what was about to become her cage.

With my best Bay Area "OMG hihihi!" I hugged the gorgeous pair, and Fivestar, eyes glittering and smiling irrepressibly told me that soon she'd be covered in clothespins, and that she'd love it if I would help remove them during the performance. I am not sure if I responded in English or Klingon. Soon she was rigged and giggling and clothespinned, suspended off the floor and inviting us voyeurs to pull off a few pins. When I finally got up my nerve -- hey, have you ever done this before? -- I actually had to wait in line behind several other women who wanted to give it a try. A stunning woman in 1950s dress and Cuban heel stockings, perfect hair, and period makeup made the most of Fivestar, as did a tall platinum haired goddess in black lace. Fivestar smiled and wiggled as the pins were pulled off; I finally got my turn and we laughed our way through it while I told her how beautiful she looked, of course. At the conclusion, Jiz Lee covered Fivestar's mouth with smiley kisses, pulling clothespins from her lips simultaneously.

And that was only the beginning. Revered rope artist Lew Rubens (boundanddetermined.com, link not work safe) kept the stunning Amina Noir in full dress while playfully binding her long dark hair and then the rest of her in classic white rope. Master rigger Lochai enacted a performance piece with three women (including Lorelei Lee) about communication overload and the art of giving up and letting go -- with rope and bondage as the conduit for metaphoric release. Impassioned bondage genius James Mogul suspended Madison Young for the finale, weighting her against earthy counterbalances of river rocks. In the corner, Sadie Lune (sadieswife.blogspot.com, NSFW) posed as a faceless human mannequin in bridal bondage, wed to a live snake that acted as partner and erotically as a suggestive phallus. I sat on a chair against a wall getting that foot rub -- would you say no? -- with a naked yet rope-trussed girl laughing and joking with me at my feet, while also thinking that the snake was probably the only one truly enjoying the makeup-melting heat.

Of course the private erotic event happened on our hottest day of the year, Murphy has nothing to do with it. We'll call it Matt Smith's Law. But there were so many smiles at Femina Potens and so much laughter and comfort with all the bondage and intensity, that only the heat was uncomfortable. No one got waterboarded. Iced down a little, sure. It was so not horrible.
